In the year 2000, I made my first woodturning - a segmented bowl. Using graph paper and a calculator, I developed my plan and went to work. I made my rings, glued them together and put it on my lathe and watched it wobble - a really bad wobble. I'd gone too far to start over and so I kept turning. Sure enough, the bowl came apart due to a poor design and assembly.
Since my day job was running a software company, I thought I could create a software application that would let me visualize stacked segmented rings and then adjust the inside and outside diameters to allow for a wall profile. With accurate calculations, I was sure to have better turning results. So with the help of my best friend and top-notch programmer, Tom Denny, I designed the software and he wrote the code resulting in the release of Woodturner PRO 1.0 in 2001.
Woodturner PRO was excellent at performing calculations, but it was not a great tool for designing the bowl's profile. So I set out to design a piece of software that would allow Bezier curves to construct a wall profile that could be used in Woodturner PRO. Tom got to work and in 2002, we had our second piece of software - 3D Design PRO.
Most segmented bowls have a feature ring. After seeing the fantastic book by Charles Rannefeld, Laminated Designs in Wood, which used multi-generation laminations to construct simple or elaborate designs, I once again got to work designing a program that would allow this technique to be modeled on a computer's screen. This time, I decided to be the test my ability to write the software as well as design it. This quickly gave me a tremendous appreciation of just how good a programmer Tom was. It also resulted in Lamination PRO - the first software I ever wrote myself.
And now, 15 years after selling our first copy of Woodturner PRO, these three software programs are now selling around the world and have become the standard for the power and ease of use they deliver to segmented woodturners.
With a bit of extra markup, it's possible to add any kind of HTML content like headings, paragraphs, or buttons into thumbnails.
