Using a Laser to create designs from laminated boards

Here is an illustration of how the a laser can be used for positioning laminated boards for precision crosscutting:

First, use the edge of the table saw sled to position the laser dot.  By placing the dot immediately off the edge of the sled, the laser will show the path of the sawblade.  With the miter fence set at the desired angle, slide the laminated board and sled until the center of the strip is exactly under the laser dot.  Make the first cut.
To cut equal strips, reposition the laser dot so that it points at an easily recognizable point such as where two lines intersect.
Now simply slide the board until the same point of the next repeating unit is under the laser dot.  By cutting the strips in this manner, errors will be small and will not be compounded as would be the case if a stop block was used.

A laser has many applications beyond positioning of laminates.  For example, if you need to drill holes for shelving every two inches, mount a fence on your drill press and drill the first hole.  Mount the laser on the drill press table and position the laser dot so that it is exactly two inches away from the hole you just drilled.  Now slide the board until the hole is positioned under the laser dot.  Drill your next hole and repeat this process until all holes are drilled.
