Magnetic Goose
and Laser/Torch

The Magnetic Goose and the Laser/Torch are two separate products that can be used separately or combined (as shown) to give woodworkers and woodturners a vast assortment of capabilities.

Specifications

The Magnetic Goose has a very powerful 4” magnet connected to an 18” gooseneck. The top of the gooseneck has a 5/8” x 27 thread connector. This thread size is the standard for microphone clips. Included with the Magnetic Goose is a clip that will hold cylindrical objects that are 1-1/8” – 1-1/2” in diameter.

The Laser/Torch is a waterproof combination device. It is a Super White flashlight provided by six LEDs. In the center of this configuration is a red laser pointer with a wavelength of 650nm. One switch controls the torch and another controls the laser. Both switches are now persistent, meaning that the laser will remain lit even when you're not pressing the button.

The Laser/Torch requires 4 AA batteries (included) that can result in a battery life of 56 hours, depending on battery classification. This means that you will never have to search for a specialty battery in the event the device is inadvertently left on.

Uses of the Magnetic Goose and Laser/Torch

Used independently or together, you’ll find many uses for this combination of devices. A single microphone clip has been included with the product, but since there is a vast number of microphone diameters, clips of all sizes can be attached to the top of the gooseneck. Nearly all microphone clips use the same 5/8” – 27 thread.

Laminate Laser / Registration Positioning

The laser on the gooseneck is a perfect way to position boards for cutting strips from laminated woods to create second and third generation designs. Using the laser in this way also allows the laser to be used to position boards for repeated drilling or cutting based on registrations created by previous holes or cuts. Dust Collection

The included microphone clip is the perfect size to hold a 1-1/4” vacuum hose that is a standard size of virtually all types of Shop Vacuums. Simply mount the Magnetic Goose on your desired tool, clip in the vacuum tube and direct it to the place where dust will be expelled. The following pictures show the Magnetic Goose attached to a bandsaw, tablesaw and a drill press:

In the event you have a larger dust collection hose you wish to position, this can be accomplished by attaching a 12” length of 1-1/4” PVC pipe to the hose with band clamps. You’ll now be able to attach this to the gooseneck and position dust collection at the point where it is most needed:

Lathe Depth Finder

When creating hollow forms, it is often wise to first drill a hole to the desired depth which can be used for reference purposes. Even the slightest error in drilling or determining the depth of this hole can be disastrous to the turning.

By mounting the Magnetic Goose to the tailstock of the turning, the gooseneck can be positioned such that the laser points to the very tip of a drill mounted in the tailstock. By simply pushing the tailstock into the turning, the laser will accurately indicate the depth of the drill bit.

Lathe Mounted Task Light

By mounting the Magnetic Goose to the lathe, the LED torch can be used as a task light which can be easily repositioned to put additional light just at the place most required. This light is particularly helpful in lighting the inside of a hollow turning because of its relatively small size which means that it can be positioned near the turning and still be out of the way. Since the torch uses LED lights, it doesn't generate any heat.

Photographic Lighting Assist

Even filtered light in a photo booth creates shadows. These shadows result in a lack of detail and a photo that is often stark and highly contrasted. By bouncing light off a reflector, the light is both dispersed and softened and a better picture can be created without constantly having to add additional light sources. In the picture to the right, a bowl was photographed with a single light source through a translucent filter. The lack of detail on the right side of the bowl and the inside of the bowl make this a poor photograph.

By taking a length of 1-1/4” PVC and cutting a lengthwise slit into it, a piece of cardboard covered in crumpled aluminum wrap can be inserted into the slit. This bounce reflector can then be held by the gooseneck and can be positioned as desired.

This single light source has now been bounced in a way that shadows are lessened and detail is seen even inside the bowl.

Now it’s your turn!

These are just some of the ways the Magnetic Goose and the Laser/Torch can be used. I hope you’ll experiment to find your own uses and please let us know when you’ve found a new use!
