Having
been a longtime woodworker, in 1998 I needed to
create legs for a table I was building and decided
that turned legs had the look I was after. I couldn't
find the quality I was after and so I decided
to make my own. One thing led to another, and
a $120 lathe to create four legs has grown into
a new passion. I guess it was just natural that
my love for woodworking would eventually lead
me to woodturning.
While
I have been interested in many different facets
of woodturning, segmented turning is what has
really captured my interest. Not only does it
give the turner unlimited design opportunities,
there's hardly ever any endgrain! You can take
piece of lumber with nasty endgrain and, with
a little imagination and creativity, you can bring
out the true beauty of the wood.
Woodturning
is strictly a hobby for me - for now. I sell my
work through a few shops in St. Claire, Missouri,
hometown for my wife and I, and occasionally at
local auctions. Much of my inspiration comes from
seeing the work of others. How I envy those who
naturally have imagination and creativity and
come up with very original designs. It is both
fun and challenging to see what they have done
and then apply my own style and techniques to
come up with something that will hopefully inspire
others.
